This process basically involves mixing fats and oils with a certain amount of alkali. In soap making, this mixture results in the formation of salts of fatty acids. These salts capture the dirt and grease ensuring that they will be removed from the surface. As this is washed by water, the dirt and soap mixture comes with it, leaving nothing but a clean surface.

The products of soap making are commonly known as handmade soaps. These kinds of soaps are slightly different from the commercially available soaps that we are used to. Handmade soaps are usually gentler on the skin. Since there will always be excess amount of fats which is added into the soap base, this results into moisturizing soaps. What happens during superfatting is that the glycerin is left into the mixture. This is why handmade soaps are basically friendly when it comes to the skin.
