Saving Money On Home Energy Use

I think almost every one is familiar with the green technology of producing electricity by using the sun and the wind. Using wind turbines and solar panels to produce electric energy is a very excellent way to save money on your electric bills. Even though these are very good ways to save money there are other ways that will help too.

One way to cut your energy bill is to set back your thermostat on your heating system. This can cut the costs of both the fuel that is used and also the electricity that your heating system use. This is a no-brainier and there is no work involved to do this.

Another thing you can do is use solar energy, if some of your rooms faces the sun during the day, is open your drapes and let the sun warm the home. Just remember that when it cools off in the evening close the drapes to keep the warm air inside. One other thing to remember is in hot weather do just the opposite, close the drapes when the sun is shinning in and open them in the evening. This will save money and be a lot easier on your air conditioner.

Cracks around the doors and windows can let lots of cold air into the home when it is cold outside. Use calking around windows and door to fill any cracks that there may be. If your windows are not the latest thermopane windows you can cover them with plastic film. This will help stop the induction of cold through the uninsulated windows.

When it comes to your furnace there are a couple of things you can do to conserve. Number one is to make sure the filters in the furnace are clean. A dirty clogged filter will constrict the air flow, putting more stress on the forced air motor. Not only will this impede the air flow it might over heat the electric motor. Also while you are checking the air filter check for any leaks in the duct work. If possible wrap the duct work in fiberglass insulation but never use cloth backed tapes.

Use a programmable thermostat for savings and also for the convenience. It can be set to come on a certain time in the morning, turn down the heat a certain time in the evening and also turn down the thermostat certain times of the day for when no one is home due to things such as work.

If you have a fireplace make sure that the damper is in good working order and seals tight when not in use. A open or leaking damper will let the warmer air in the room escape up the chimney drawing cold air from any leaks that are in other places of the house.

If you have a swimming pool you can use a cover to hold in the heat when it is not in use. All of these things can add up to big savings over time. Start doing them now and start saving big.

If you are really interested cutting your energy bill and you can look at a long term investment than I would suggest you look in to alternative energy sources such as wind energy, solar energy and hydro power energy. These energy sources are all renewable clean energy sources. All of these energy sources can save you money in the long term, but they are costly to start up.
