Lanai is a tiny island, consisting of only 140 sq. miles. Lanai City is rife with history and because many of the buildings have remained unaltered since the 1800s, it tends to give visitors the sensation of stepping back in time.

On the south side of Lanai is Kaunolu Village, which is an historical landmark. Kaunolu Village has preserved ruins and petroglyph carvings dating back to ancient times. This makes it an ideal place to visit for anyone interested in ancient Hawaiian history.

Just southeast of Kaunolu Village are several abandoned fishing villages called Lopa, Naha and Keomuku. These villages, although abandoned for over 100 years, are still said to be guarded by the ancient Hawaiian gods.

Also on the southeast side of Lanai are beautiful beaches where swimmers can relax in tranquility or enjoy snorkeling. Everything about this tiny island promotes peaceful tranquility for all who visit.

Like all of the Hawaiian islands, Lanai was formed by a volcano. The volcano Palawai, that formed the island some 1.5 million years ago, is no longer active. But visitors can hike and explore Palawai and observe some of the marvels of nature.
